New curtain making as your Requirement
Making new curtains involves measuring your window, choosing fabric and heading style (like rod pocket or pleated), cutting fabric with extra for hems and fullness, sewing panels together, adding lining and heading tape, then finishing with neat hems for a custom look, requiring basic sewing skills and tools like a machine, iron, scissors, and pins. Key steps include precise measurements, joining fabric widths with right sides together, pressing seams, and attaching heading tape or rings for hanging.
1. Planning & Measuring
- Measure Window: Measure width (pole/track to finials) and desired length (pole top to floor/sill).
- Calculate Fabric: For fullness, multiply width by 2-2.5x. Add 15cm+ for top/bottom hems, plus pattern repeat if any.
- Choose Heading: Decide on rod pocket (easiest), pinch pleat, or grommets to match your pole/track.
- Select Fabric: Furnishing cottons are good; consider blackout or thermal lining options.
2. Cutting & Sewing
- Cut Fabric: Cut panels to required length, adding allowances for hems and headings.
- Join Widths: Place fabric widths right sides together, stitch side seams, press seams open.
- Prepare Lining: Cut lining slightly narrower than the main fabric.
- Attach Lining: Place main fabric and lining right sides together, sew sides and bottom.
- Create Hems: Fold and press top, bottom, and side hems (e.g., 1″ side, 4-6″ bottom).
3. Finishing & Hanging
- Add Heading: Sew on heading tape, or create rod pockets/grommet holes as planned.
- Train Curtains: Iron or steam them to help fabrics fall correctly and set pleats before hanging.
- Hang: Attach clips or hooks and slide onto your rod or track.
